Teen Writers Contest!

In 250 words exactly can you write a short story?
It can be of any genre from fantasy to horror, science-fiction to romance.
The prizes will be announced at our next teen writers group, April 16th at 5:30 PM.
Please submit entries no later than April 27th.
Entries must be typed.


Judging will be done by authors Al Them and Rasheea Eilee.
The contest will run the month of April.

New Manga!

The Lansdowne Public Library was among 200 libraries to receive a set of 50 translated works of collection of Japanese modern fiction and non-fiction from the American Library Association, thanks to a generous grant from Toyota Motor Corporation.

Among the books are several Manga titles which can be found in our Young Adult section!

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Read the 2009 Newberry Award Winning story of Nobody Owens, a normal boy, except that he has been raised by ghosts and other denizens of the graveyard.

Enter the Young Poets of Delaware County Poetry Competition

Calling all poets!

For all school-age residents of Delaware County, grades 1-12
CONTEST GUIDELINES
Original poems must be typed or neatly written on 8 1/2” by 11” paper; no odd size or construction paper, please.
· Student’s name
· Address
· Home phone number
· Grade
· School
· School District

If information is not listed, entry will be disqualified.
No entries will be returned.
Only one poem per student may be entered.
Poems will be judged by grade level.

Deadline for submissions is Friday, March 13, 2009.

Prizes will include saving bonds for first place winners and publication in a booklet for all 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winners.

Winners will be notified.
Please, no calls after poems are submitted!
Entries should be submitted to any public library in Delaware County

Meet the Author!

Good Day Friends!














Thursday evening we had a great visit with author
Allison Whittenberg! Allison is the author of three books, "Sweet Thang", "Life is Fine" and "Hollywood and 'Maine". Copies of the first two books are available at the library in the Young Adult section. "Hollywood and 'Maine" will be available next week.




Allison shared her experiences as a writer and after sampling some of the writers works gave feedback.





















The Writers Group meets every other Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00.

Join us for our next meeting on Thursday, February 5th.

What is YALSA?

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), established in 1957, is a division of the American Library Association. The mission of YALSA is to advocate, promote and strengthen service to young adults as part of the continuum of total library service, and to support those who provide service to this population









Awards
Alex AwardsThe Alex Awards are given annually to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults.
Margaret A. Edwards AwardThe Edwards Award honors an author and a specific work for lifetime contribution in writing books of enduring popularity with teenagers.
William C. Morris Award The Morris Award honors a book written for young adults by a first-time, previously unpublished author. The first award will be given in 2009.
Odyssey Award This award honors the producer of the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults, available in English in the United States. Co-administered with ALSC.
Michael L. Printz AwardThis award honors excellence in literature written for young adults.
YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young AdultsYALSA's newest award will honor the best nonfiction book for young adults; the first winner will be named in 2010.

Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult ReadersThis list suggests items for recreational reading that have wide appeal to teens who, for whatever reason, do not like to read.
Teens' Top TenThis list allows teens to choose their ten favorite books from a list of current titles nominated by teen book groups. Nominations are listed in April. Teens vote for their favorite books each Teen Read Week. The votes are tallied and the list is available every October.
